Researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center have shown that while a type of "good" fat found in the body can be activated by cold temperatures, it is not able to be activated by the drug ephedrine.
The finding, published in today's issue of PNAS USA Early Edition, may lead to drugs or other methods aimed at activating the good fat, known as brown fat. When activated, brown fat burns calories and can help in the battle against obesity.
"We propose that agents that work similarly to cold in activating brown fat specifically can provide promising approaches to fighting obesity while minimizing other side effects," said Aaron Cypess, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant investigator and staff physician at Joslin and lead author of the paper.
"At the same time, we now know that ephedrine is not the way to do it," he added.
Brown fat is found in humans naturally and consumes calories to generate heat. Prior studies had shown that brown fat can be activated by cold exposure in a process called non-shivering thermogenesis.
Researchers have been working for years to find ways to activate brown fat.
Ephedrine, a decongestant and bronchodilator, has been used as a weight loss drug because it increases the number of calories burned. However, there are side effects.
In this study, the Joslin team tested 10 study subjects in three ways. They were each separately given injections of ephedrine, given injections of saline as a control, and made to wear "cooling vests" that had water cooled to 57 degrees pumped into them. After each intervention, the brown fat activity was measured using PET/CT scans.
The researchers found that brown fat activity was the same following both the ephedrine and saline injections. However, after the subjects wore the cooling vests for two hours, their brown fat activity was stimulated significantly.
Both interventions ? ephedrine injections and the wearing of the cooling vests ? did result in the same number of calories being burned, Dr. Cypess noted.
"But we found that ephedrine was not using brown fat to do it," he said. "This is the first time it has been found that ephedrine does not turn on brown fat."
Both interventions had other effects on the sympathetic nervous system -- which activates the fight or flight response -- such as increased blood pressure, but those associated with brown fat activation were fewer, the study showed.
"Mild cold exposure stimulates (brown fat) energy expenditure with fewer other systemic effects, suggesting that cold activates specific sympathetic pathways," the paper concludes. "Agents that mimic cold activation of (brown fat) could provide a promising approach to treating obesity while minimizing systemic effects."
As a result of the findings, drug companies may find it easier to come up with agents that stimulate brown fat to help people lose weight, Dr. Cypess said.
One method may be simply to design cooling vests that people can wear to help them lose weight. A future study will have subjects wear the vests for several weeks to see what happens, Dr. Cypess said.
"Will they get the same health benefits they would have seen with several weeks of exercise? That's the billion dollar question."
The findings should also be of interest to heart researchers interested in the mechanisms of activation of the sympathetic nervous system, he added.

I am wondering if the surrendering mothers of today and not long ago, were furnished and/or asked for the medical and psycho-social history and/or a copy of the Homestudy, of the adoptive parents they chose to place their child with prior to the adoption finalization? If not, why not? Adoptive parents.. have any of the first mothers who chose you to adopt her child, did the nmother at anytime request this directly from you or thru the facilitators of the surrender/adoption? I would think it just as important for a surrendering mother to have the written medical and mental health histories of the adoptive parents (adoptive family) she is placing her child with, as it is important for the adoptive parents to have from the surrendering mother/parents. Would this also not help a surrendering mother to make a more informed/educated decision to place her child with the aparents she has selected? I think this would only be in regards to private and adoption agency placements. I am assuming most foster care adoptions in America, the surrendering mother is not ?placing?, per se. Am just wondering. Thank you.

At this point the birth parents can pick the adoptive family?if they want to. I?m sure they can get that info if they require it as part of the terms of placement. I?m sure they would have to actually ask for it though, I don?t think that is something automatically given.

If you consider yourself a grease monkey and car junkie, a shrine to car culture opening its doors on Saturday?is for you.
Built on nine acres adjacent to a busy stretch of Interstate 5 in Tacoma, Wash., about 30 miles south of Seattle,?LeMay ??America?s Car Museum?(ACM) has its high beams set on illustrating a century of automotive history and celebrating what museum president and CEO David Madeira calls ?America?s love affair with the automobile.?
?This museum is about is that special car ? your first car, the car you took to college, the one that broke down, the one you had your first date in or the car you drove to the prom,??said?ACM spokesman Scot Keller.
From the outside, the gleaming four-story, 165,000-square-foot building resembles a shiny jet fuselage. Inside, there are galleries and exhibits that together feature about?350 cars, including sports cars, one-of-a-kinds and pristine classics.

The shiny new facility showcases some of the prized possessions amassed by Harold LeMay, who according to the Guinness Book of World Records, amassed the largest private collection of automobiles.
The first and largest exhibit visitors encounter at ACM includes several dozen choice cars from the collection of Harold LeMay, including?a 1916 Pierce Arrow Brougham, a 1932 Chevrolet Canopy Express ?Huckster? truck (a favorite of early traveling salesmen) and a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible.
LeMay, a Tacoma-area businessman, amassed more than?3,000 vehicles. The?Guinness Book of World Records declared the LeMay Collection to be the largest private collection in the world. LeMay died?in 2000 at the age of 81.
The cars displayed in the LeMay Exhibit will rotate, as will the themed exhibits in the rest of ACM. Those exhibits, assembled by guest curator and automotive expert Ken Gross, currently include a look the Indianapolis 500, Ferrari in America and the 1960s British Invasion ? not the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but MG, Austin-Healy, Triumph, Jaguar and Aston Martin.
There?s also an exhibit featuring Buicks, Cadillacs, a Chrysler, a Hupmobile and several other American-made cars from the collection of jewelry magnate Nicola Bulgari, a celebrity the museum describes as ?Italian by birth but American behind the wheel.?
ACM also features an area where collectors can store and supply their own cars, a slot-car track, high-end racing simulators, and a?3.5-acre outdoor show field that will host car shows, live concerts and drive-in movies.
Summer hours for ACM are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through Labor Day. Admission costs are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, students members of the military, and $8 for kids (5-12).?
