Mathematician Claims Proof of Connection between Prime Numbers

A Japanese mathematician claims to have the proof for the ABC conjecture, a statement about the relationship between prime numbers that has been called the most important unsolved problem in number theory.

If Shinichi Mochizuki's 500-page proof stands up to scrutiny, mathematicians say it will represent one of the most astounding achievements of mathematics of the twenty-first century. The proof will also have ramifications all over mathematics, and even in the real-world field of data encryption.

The ABC conjecture, proposed independently by the mathematicians David Masser and Joseph Oesterle in 1985 but not proven by them, involves the concept of square-free numbers, or numbers that cannot be divided by the square of any number. (A square number is the product of some integer with itself). According to the mathematics writer Ivars Peterson in an article for the Mathematical Association of America, the square-free part of a number?n, denoted by sqp(n), is the largest square-free number that can be obtained by multiplying the distinct prime factors of?n. Prime numbers are numbers that can only be evenly divided by 1 and themselves, such as 5 and 17.

The ABC conjecture makes a statement about pairs of numbers that have no prime factors in common, Peterson explained. If A and B are two such numbers and C is their sum, the ABC conjecture holds that the square-free part of the product A x B x C, denoted by sqp(ABC), divided by C is always greater than 0. Meanwhile, sqp(ABC) raised to any power greater than 1 and divided by C is always greater than 1. [What Makes Pi So Special?]

This conjecture may seem esoteric, but for mathematicians, it's deep and ubiquitous. "The ABC conjecture is amazingly simple compared to the deep questions in number theory," Andrew Granville of the University of Georgia in Athens was quoted as saying in the MAA article. "This strange conjecture turns out to be equivalent to all the main problems. It's at the center of everything that's been going on."

The conjecture has also been described as a sort of grand unified theory of whole numbers, in that the proofs of many other important theorems follow immediately from it. For example, Fermat's famous Last Theorem (which states that?aⁿ+bⁿ=cⁿ?has no integer solutions if?n>2) follows as a direct consequence of the ABC conjecture.

In a 1996 article in The Sciences, the mathematician Dorian Goldfeld of Columbia University said the ABC conjecture "is more than utilitarian; to mathematicians it is also a thing of beauty. Seeing so many Diophantine problems unexpectedly encapsulated into a single equation drives home the feeling that all the subdisciplines of mathematics are aspects of a single underlying unity.

"No wonder mathematicians are striving so hard to prove it ? like rock climbers at the base of a sheer cliff, exploring line after line of minute cracks in the rock face in the hope that one of them will offer just enough purchase for the climbers to pick their way to the top."

And now, one such climber may have reached the summit. According to Nature News, Mochizuki, a mathematician at Kyoto University, has proved extremely deep theorems in the past, lending credence to his claim that he has the proof for ABC. However, a huge investment of time by many other mathematicians will be required to go through the gargantuan proof and verify the claim.

"If the ABC conjecture yields, mathematicians will find themselves staring into a cornucopia of solutions to long-standing problems," Goldfeld wrote.

Catholic university course on deviance scrutinized

Three weeks ago, an alumnus of Franciscan University of Steubenville was researching online a rape that had occurred years ago near the campus.

One of the search results upset the alum: A social work course on deviant behavior offered by the Catholic university that lumped together ?murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness and drug use.?

The alum, a member of a Facebook group for gay graduates of Franciscan University, posted the course description, and members of the group contacted the sole accrediting agency for social work education to examine the university?s program.????

"The fact that homosexuality was identified in the course description as a deviant behavior raises a flag," Stephen Holloway, director of the accrediting agency, Council on Social Work Education, told National Public Radio.

The group, meanwhile, has asked that ?homosexuality? and ?mental illness? be removed from the description.

Mental illness is not deviant, noted Elizabeth Vermilyea, a psychology professional who founded the Facebook group, and homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973.

?I?ve talked to people who took the course and judging from the textbook, it seemed pretty harmless,? she said. ?But that description sends a message in an atmosphere that?s already sending messages.?

Plus, she said: ?They didn?t put pedophilia in that description and that would have been a no-brainer.?

Franciscan University defended itself in a statement to NPR, saying the university ?follows Catholic Church teaching in regard to homosexuality and treats homosexual persons with ?respect, compassion, and sensitivity? (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2358) while holding homosexual acts as ?intrinsically disordered? (Catechism, No. 2357).

But Vermilyea argued the course description doesn?t follow Catholic teachings.

?The Catholic Church says that being gay is not sinful but the actions are disorderly,? she said. In other words, it?s OK to be gay, just not to act on those feelings.

Gregory Gronbacher, a member of the Facebook group who graduated from Franciscan in 1990, said he doesn?t believe administrators are evil ? ?They mean well but they live within a bubble.?

?If you live in that sort of intellectual isolation where gay people are hidden, it?s easy to wander down that path where gay people are rapists and murderers ? that scary 'other,'? he said.

In college he was a serious Catholic who dated quietly ? speaking out could have gotten him booted from school, he said. He went on to become a theology and philosophy professor but has since left academia and the church, in part because of its stance on homosexuality.

Other members of the Facebook group ? there are 105 ? have posted memories of being ridiculed, shamed and sent to recovery groups for being gay.

?I didn?t start it for activism,? Vermilyea said. ?It was community for people who understand the lesbian gay experience but also who went to that university. A lot of people needed their wounds to heal coming out.?

NASA catches Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Michael in the Atlantic

Satellite images from two NASA satellites were combined to create a full picture of Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Michael spinning in the Atlantic Ocean. Imagery from NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites showed Leslie now past Bermuda and Michael in the north central Atlantic, and Leslie is much larger than the smaller, more powerful Michael.

Images of each storm were taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS instrument that flies onboard both the Aqua and Terra satellites. Both satellites captured images of both storms on Sept. 7 and Sept. 10. The image from Sept. 7 showed a much more compact Michael with a visible eye. By Sept. 10, the eye was no longer visible in Michael and the storm appeared more elongated from south to north.

Leslie Moves Past Bermuda Heads to North Atlantic

On Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. Leslie was a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 55 knots. It was about 240 miles (390 km) south-southeast of Bermuda near 29.4 North latitude and 62.5 West longitude. Leslie was moving north and expected to pass to the east of or close to Bermuda later in the day. A tropical storm warning was in force for Bermuda on Sept. 8 and 9, and forecasters at the National Hurricane Center expected rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches in Bermuda.

By Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. EDT, Leslie had passed to the east of Bermuda and was centered about 175 miles (280 km) east-northeast of the island, near 33.4 North and 61.2 East. Leslie's maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph (95 kmh) as it continued moving to the north at 14 mph (22 kmh).

By Monday, Sept. 10, Leslie had moved north of Bermuda and was about 805 miles (1,300 km) south-southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada, near 36.5 North latitude and 60.8 West longitude. Leslie was moving to the north-northeast at 18 mph (30 kmh) and had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (95 kmh).

MODIS satellite data shows that Leslie has one main band of powerful thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, located to the northeast quadrant of the storm.

Watches have now been posted for Newfoundland, Canada as Leslie tracks northward. A hurricane watch is now in effect in Newfoundland, from Stones Cove to Charlottetown. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, in this case within 24 to 36 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In addition, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Newfoundland, from Indian Harbor to Stones Cove and from Fogo Island to Charlottetown.

Monday, Sept. 10 is expected to be Leslie's last day in warm waters and low-wind shear. After today the storm is forecast to move into cooler waters and the wind shear is expected to kick up. Those are two factors that weaken a tropical cyclone. Leslie is expected to start transitioning from a warm core system to a cold core system later on Sept. 10, which means the storm will be undergoing a change into an extra-tropical storm.

Michael, Once "Wide-Eyed," Now Weakening from Atmosphere and Ocean

Hurricane Michael experienced some adjustments in "vision" over the weekend when the storm's eye grew wider. On Sept. 8, Michael was still a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 90 knots (150 kmh). Michael was located near 33.1 North latitude and 42.3 West longitude, about 925 miles (1,485 km) west-southwest of the Azores. Michael's tropical-storm-force wind field was about 70 miles (110 km) out from the center, making the storm about 140 miles (220 km) in diameter. Michael was weakening slowly due to atmospheric conditions and cooler waters and by Sept. 9, Michael's maximum sustained winds were still near 90 mph (150 kmh) when it was 990 miles (1,590 km) west-southwest of the Azores islands. On Sunday, Michael's eye widened from 10 miles in diameter to 30 miles in diameter, as was seen in satellite imagery.

By Monday, Sept. 10, Michael's maximum sustained winds at 5 a.m. EDT were near 80 mph (130 kmh). Michael was centered about 1,065 miles (1,715 km) west of the Azores Islands near 33.5 North and 45.2 West. Michael was moving to the west at 7 mph (11 kmh) and is expected to turn northwestward later on Sept. 10, followed by a turn to the north and northeast. Michael could become a tropical storm by the end of the day on Sept. 10, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Another Storm Brewing in the Eastern Atlantic

Satellite imagery showed that another tropical depression may be forming in the eastern Atlantic. The low, called System 90L appears more organized on Monday, Sept. 10. It is located about 855 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and is being carefully watched. The National Hurricane Center gives it a 90 percent chance of becoming a depression later on Sept. 1 as it moves west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.
