Kanye West Reacts to Kim Kardashian's Sexy, Post-Baby Bathing Suit Selfie

Honey, he's home! Kim Kardashian's sexy, super-revealing bathing suit selfie -- in which she showed off her post-baby booty in a skimpy white one-piece -- sent fans into a tizzy on Wednesday, Oct. 16. But no one was more excited by the photo than the reality star's boyfriend, Kanye West. 

"HEADING HOME NOW," the rapper tweeted shortly after Kardashian posted the picture on Instagram.

West, 36, has been his girlfriend's most vocal supporter since the birth of their daughter, North, four months ago. When her post-pregnancy weight loss plateaued this summer, he made sure she knew he thought she was gorgeous at any size.

"Kanye tells her she's beautiful," a source told Us Weekly in August. "He wants to boost her confidence and goes out of his way so she doesn't have to ask."

He has even volunteered on occasion to be her workout buddy. Last week, he accompanied Kardashian, 32, to a Barry's Bootcamp class in Santa Monica, Calif.

"It was super early and grueling workout," an insider told Us of the outing, noting that both stars were "all smiles, showing affection toward each other and being very encouraging."

Kardashian has been hard at work in recent weeks getting her pre-baby figure back -- and it looks like it's paying off. In addition to regular workouts, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star is sticking to a strict carb-free diet.

"She is eating lots of lean proteins, healthy fats like nuts and avocado, carbs, fruits, veggies, and cheese," a rep for the Atkins diet told Us. "She wanted to be a healthy, nursing mom and not toxify her milk with her diet or lose weight too quickly. She's been doing Atkins since her doctor approved it at the end of June."

Natalie Portman Shows Skin in Marie Claire, Says She "Freaked" Over Moving to Paris

Natalie Portman is living the dream. Gracing the pages of Marie Claire's November issue in a cleavage-baring embellished frock, the Black Swan Oscar winner can't help gushing a little over where she's at in her life, personally, professionally, and even geographically.

Being in L.A., she tells the magazine, is an experience unlike any other. "I just really really love it here. It's one of the most exciting places to be in the world right now," she says. "It's really central in terms of the arts. It feels like things are happening in L.A., you know? New York is more where art is bought than where art is made..."

Portman won't be living in L.A. for much longer, though. She and her family -- husband Benjamin Millipied and son Aleph, 2 -- are currently preparing for an overseas move to Paris, France, where Millipied will take over as the new director of the Paris Opera Ballet in September 2014. The move took Marie Claire's cover girl by surprise at first, but she feels "lucky" to have such exciting opportunities. 

"When Ben asked me if I wanted to go to Paris, I freaked," she confesses. "Everyone dreams of living in Paris."

The Israeli-born star also opens up to the mag about her parents, Shelley and Avner Hershlag. "They made me feel that they would drop anything at any time to help me," she says. "I never felt like there was anything more important than me. Which I know can probably create an a--hole, too. It gives you a deep sense of security and safety to feel that your parents will love you no matter what."

One not-so-great thing about her childhood? "I grew up around a lot of snobbism about what was important and what was serious, and I really reject that," she says. That explains her varied resume, which includes roles in artsy films like The Darjeeling Limited, as well as blockbusters like Thor: The Dark World.

The latter, a sequel to 2011's Thor, is set to be released later this year -- and Portman can't say enough good things about its star, Chris Hemsworth. "Chris is, like, one of the greatest people in Hollywood," she gushes of her costar, Liam Hemsworth's older brother. "He's the kind of actor who's so charismatic, he must be tired when he goes home."

She has her own admirers, too, of course. And for the most part, "people are really cool," she tells Marie Claire. The one exception? "I try and stay away from drunk people -- that's when they start getting rude and aggressive, like, 'Why did you suck in that movie?'"

Fish Armor Repels Vicious Piranha Bite

A freshwater Amazonian fish has evolved scales with microscopic armorlike structures specially designed to resist a piranha's piercing bite, new research shows.

Arapaima gigas is the largest — and evolutionarily, one of the oldest — fish species living within the lakes of the Amazon River basin. A team of researchers based at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory interested in determining how this fish evolved to coexist so successfully with the vicious predatory piranha examined A. gigas scales at a higher resolution than any past examination had. They found that each individual scale contains stacked spiral staircaselike layers of proteins that rotate inward and outward to absorb or repel the force of a piranha bite. Scaly defense

The spiral staircaselike structures within each scale provide the last line of defense in what the team considers a hierarchy of defenses that range from macroscopic to microscopic scales. For a first line of defense, the fish scales each overlap by about 60 percent, which provide a double layer of protection across the majority of the fish's body. A piranha tooth can easily penetrate the thickness of one scale, but not the thickness of two, the researchers said.

Zooming deeper into the scales, each has a protective hard outer shell that is about 0.5 millimeters thick — about the thickness of a human hair — and a softer inner core that is about 1 mm thick. This inner core is made of collagen, a protein found in human skin, and provides a degree of elasticity lacking to the brittle outer shell.

Finally, each soft inner core consists of multiple spiral staircaselike structures that rotate inward and outward in response to the force of a bite.

"The beauty of the structure is when you apply a load in a certain direction, the spiral stairs have the ability to rotate, and can modify the loads you have applied to the entire sample to withstand the loads," said study co-author Bernd Gludovatz, a postdoctoral researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The team applied forces similar to that of a piranha bite to sample A. gigas scales, and observed the response of microscopic collagen layers using a technique called small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).

Though this is the first time the distinct structural mechanism has been found in fish scales, other fish may have similar structures but have not yet been studied at such a high resolution, Gludovatz said.

Military applications

Aside from explaining the biological mystery of how one fish evolved to coexist with a vicious predator, the new findings may also inform bio-inspired material design, such as innovations in military armor.

"What we want to do is learn from nature how materials evolve to be the most efficient for different individual applications," Gludovatz said. "We want to understand how nature develops these materials, and then try to copy them and make something similar and, if possible, get the mechanical properties maybe even better and more efficient."

The team has also begun studying the elastic properties of chicken and rabbit skin to better understand the microscopic properties responsible for skin elasticity.

The new findings are detailed today (Oct. 15) in the journal Nature Communications.

That's the hook of Caper, a new web series from Amy Berg and Mike Sizemore due to premiere next year on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel.

The comedy reunites Berg with Leverage star Beth Riesgraf, who plays one of the four superheroes forced to consider a life of crime in order to fund their crime-fighting lifestyle. Riesgraf isn't the only familiar face on the show; Glee's Harry Shum Jr., Justified's Abby Miller and Hartley Sawyer of TBS' Glory Daze round out the main cast. The series will be directed by Donald Murphy, who has previously worked with the Coen brothers and Oliver Stone.

Iran is planning a fresh round of talks on its nuclear program "in a few weeks" after a generally positive first round of multiparty meetings in Geneva aimed at defusing tensions with the West.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, commenting on his Facebook page, says the next meeting with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany would also be held in Geneva.

Reuters, quoting a western diplomat, says the talks are set to resume in Geneva for two days beginning Nov. 7.

On Tuesday, Tehran presented a plan to the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany to end the confrontation over its nuclear program, which it has always insisted is for peaceful purposes.

No details of that plan were released, but as The Associated Press reports:

"[Comments] from Western officials meeting with Iranian negotiators indicated interest in the proposal, described by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as designed to allow Iran to leave the 'dark' path of international isolation.

Previous rounds have often been fitful and sporadic, reflecting the deadlock between the two sides. Zarif's Facebook comments that negotiations will resume 'in a few weeks' strengthened expectations that some progress was being made. He said the follow-up will also be held in Geneva, the venue for the ongoing talks."

The election of moderate President Hassan Rouhani four months ago has opened the door to negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, which many Western analysts believe is aimed at acquiring a bomb.

England, Spain, Bosnia, Russia reach World Cup

England and defending champion Spain qualified for the World Cup on Tuesday night along with Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which earned its first berth as an independent nation.

Chile and Ecuador earned the final two automatic spots from South America. Another berth was at stake in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, the 21st of 32 slots for the field in Brazil next June.

Wayne Rooney scored in the 41st minute and Steven Gerrard in the 88th to give England (6-0-4) a 2-0 win over Poland at London's Wembley Stadium and first place in Group H by one point over Ukraine (6-1-3). The Three Lions qualified for their 14th World Cup and fifth in a row.

"We have a great togetherness, are there for each other and proved we can perform under pressure," Gerrard said.

Spain (6-0-2) won Group I with a 2-0 victory over visiting Georgia on goals by Alvaro Negredo in the 26th minute and Juan Mata in the 61st. Iker Casillas returned to starting lineup for Spain after being replaced by Victor Valdes against Belarus last week. The Spanish, who have won three straight major tournaments, including the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, qualified for their 10th straight World Cup.

"It may look practically routine, but it's important to remember how successful we've been at qualifying," coach Vicente Del Bosque said. "This is not an easy competition."

France (5-1-2) was second and will be in the playoffs despite defeating visiting Finland 3-0 on goals by Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema around Joona Toivio's own goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, Romania and Iceland also finished second in their groups, winding up in Monday's draw for the eight-team European playoffs next month along with Sweden and Croatia. The four playoff winners also will earn berths.

With a population of just over 300,000, Iceland would be the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup. Trinidad and Tobago, at about 1.3 million, was at the 2006 tournament in Germany.

The seedings for the playoffs will be determined by Thursday's FIFA rankings. Denmark (4-2-4) had the poorest record among the nine second-place teams and missed out on a playoff berth.

Bosnia (8-1-1) won 1-0 at Lithuania on Vedad Ibisevic's 68th-minute goal to win Group G on goal difference over Greece. Bosnia-Herzegovina gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1992. Almost 10,000 fans jumped, cried and screamed 'Vamos Bosnia' — or 'Go Bosnia' — when Ibisevic scored in Kaunas.

Fans headed to the airport after the game to wait for their team to arrive in the middle of the night and join the party.

Greece (8-1-1) defeated visiting Liechtenstein 2-0 as Dimitris Salpingidis scored in the seventh minute and Giorgos Karagounis added a goal in the 81st.

Russia (7-2-1) won Group F with a 1-1 tie at Azerbaijan as Roman Shirokov scored in the 15th. Portugal (6-1-3) finished a point back after defeating visiting Luxembourg 3-0 on goals by Silvestre Varela, Nani and Helder Postiga.

Italy, which already had clinched, tied Armenia 2-2 at Naples. Former Real Salt Lake forward Yura Movsisyan scored in the fourth minute for the visitors. Alessandro Florenzi and Mario Balotelli scored for the Azzurri, and Giueseppe Rossi entered in the 73rd minute for his first international appearance since Oct. 7, 2011. A 26-year-old forward who was born and lives in New Jersey, Rossi had been sidelined until last May by a knee injury late that October, which required three operations.

After clinching last week, Germany rallied for a 5-3 win at Sweden as Andre Schuerrle had a second-half hat trick following goals by Mesut Ozil and Mario Goetze.

A 2-1 win by Chile (9-6-1) over visiting Ecuador (7-5-4) earned both nations berths. Alexis Sanchez scored for Chile in the 35th minute and Gary Medel added another three minutes later, while Felipe Caicedo scored for Ecuador in the 66th.

Uruguay (7-5-4) was fifth on goal difference after a 3-2 win at home over already qualified Argentina (9-2-5) and will play a home-and-home playoff against Jordan, the fifth-place team in Asia. Cristian Rodriguez and Edison Cavani scored around a Luis Suarez penalty kick for the hosts, and Maxi Rodriguez had two goals for the visitors.

In CONCACAF, Honduras was three points ahead of Mexico for the region's last automatic berth, and Mexico was three points ahead of Panama for fourth playoff and a playoff against Oceania champion New Zealand. The U.S., which clinched last month, was at Panama, while Mexico was at Costa Rica, and Honduras at Jamaica.

In the African playoffs, Ghana routed Bob Bradley's Egypt national team 6-1 in the first leg of the home-and-home, total-goals series. The second leg is scheduled for Nov. 18 in Cairo.

Bradley was hired by Egypt in September 2011, 15 months after Ghana beat Bradley's U.S. team 2-1 in the second round of the World Cup. The Pharaohs, ranked 50th, have not qualified for the World Cup since 1990.

The 24th-ranked Black Stars have eliminated the U.S. in two straight World Cups and were knocked out by Uruguay on penalty kicks in the 2010 quarterfinals.
