97% The Artist

Ever since it charmed audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, The Artist has been one hot commodity. The Weinstein Company snapped up the film rights though they have a bit of a hard sell. The movie takes place in the era of silent movies and it also happens to be a silent movie itself. Ignoring Mel Brooks' unsung efforts, asking paying customers to sit through 100 minutes of silence, albeit accompanied by a musical score, may be a risky financial bet. That's where the appeal of being an award-winner comes into play. The Artist has been racking up awards since Cannes and has been tagged by many as the favorite to take home a Best Picture Oscar. This celebration of the Hollywood of old is a nostalgic trip through the ages, but I'm doubtful that the film is deserving of the gushing admiration. I think this would have been better had it been one of them new-fangled talkies. In 1927, the biggest star in Hollywood is George Valentin (Jean Dujardin). His latest spy caper is knocking them dead. He's prancing before a sea of photographers when he bumps into Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo). He graciously brings her into the act and the two pose for pictures. "Who's the new girl?" demands the newspaper headlines. Peppy is given her big break as George's co-star in his spy series. Peppy is a natural and over the course of two years she becomes a bona fide star. Also over those two years Hollywood has undergone a drastic makeover. New "talkies" are all the rage with the public, who now demand to hear their favorite actors speak. George is adamant that talking pictures are only a fad and he plunks his personal fortune to bankroll his directorial debut. The movie is a flop. George is viewed as a has-been; yet Peppy has been keeping a watchful eye on her old friend and waiting for the time to reveal her love for the fallen star. The Artist is a completely silent movie except for two key sequences; one of them a nightmare where George hears objects make noise. The film is an unabashed love letter to old Hollywood, and writer/director Michel Hazanavicius makes witty use of the storytelling techniques of the silent era. Much relies on editing and reactions for shaping the narrative. The story, therefore, is broken down to its simplest incarnation. Peppy Miller's star rises, as George's grows fainter. Still, The Artist has many recognizable pieces for fans of the silent era. George even has a trusted Jack Russell Terrier at his side, a clever pooch with keen mimicking abilities. There's a cute moment where Peppy slips her arm into George's coat hanging on a coat rack and pretends to caress her self as him. It's a small yet slyly tender moment. It's not a prerequisite to be well versed on silent cinema, though it helps. While a French film (a foreign designation seems superfluous when it's silent), the movie was shot in Los Angeles and is stocked with English stars like John Goodman (TV's Treme) as a film director, James Cromwell (Babe) as George's dutiful butler, Penelope Ann Miller (Flipped) as George's unhappy wife, Missi Pyle (Big Fish) as a silent film co-star, Beth Grant (Donnie Darko) as a maid, Ken Davitian (Borat) as a pawnbroker, and Malcolm McDowell (Halloween II) as a dismissive old man in a chair (the role he was bon to play). It almost becomes a side game of cameos. It's a sprightly, charming, sometimes enchanting little experiment, but in the end an experiment is all the movie turns out to be. The Artist is no great story; in fact it's pretty much the 80th rendition of A Star is Born. The transition between silent films and talkies is a subject rife with drama, and a lead character who sees his fame and fortune crumble by being left behind in a changing society, well that should be interesting. What's surprising to me the most about this film is how little you invest with it. I don't know if it's the silent gimmick or just the idle characterization, but I found myself never really engaging with the movie, always a step removed. The characters were nice but I neither celebrated their triumphs nor bemoaned their hardships. The entire affair has such a slight feel to it; the movie is a confection, a sweet treat that melts away instantly after viewing. If you strip away all the old Hollywood nostalgia, there is very little substance here. Praise Hazanavicius for his dedication to silent filmmaking techniques, but let's be reasonable here because The Artist is a pleasant experiment but nothing more. The characters and story do not bear scrutiny. This story would have been more interesting had the movie been a traditional talky. Alas, we are limited to a handful of title cards with single lines of dialogue and extreme amounts of pantomiming. If you took away the central gimmick, would anyone be interested in this movie? I wanted to be swept away by The Artist after reading all the fawning accolades, but I wasn't. The commitment of the artists on screen is commendable, but the finished product is little more than an amusing trifle of a movie. Dujardin (OSS: Lost in Rio) and Bejo (Modern Love) look like they stepped off the screen from an old Hollywood movie, al la Purple Rose of Cairo. Dujardin is a suave presence with great comedic physicality at his disposal. There's a poignant moment where George, broken down and washed up, looks into a tuxedo store window, seeing his reflection appear above the neck of the tuxedo. He gingerly smiles, wistful of times gone by, and in that sad, face crinkling little moment, Dujardin reveals more about the man behind the flashbulbs than the script ever will. Even without a word spoken, you can tell that Dujardin and Bejo have great chemistry. Bejo, the wife of the director by the way, matches Dujardin note for note in terms of star wattage. She's got a terrific smile and one of those classic faces for an Age When They Had Faces. It's a shame that the characters don't have more interaction. The Artist is a fine film but ultimately disappointing given the hype. The saddest part about my reaction to The Artist is how little I find myself having to say about this much-ballyhooed silent film. It's an exercise in nostalgic back-patting, but if you strip away the silent movie gimmick I feel like there's so little at heart here. I walked away liking the movie, being charmed by the actors but feeling unengaged and mildly indifferent. The threadbare story is too familiar, the characterization is slight, and the movie ultimately becomes light, airy, and insubstantial. The novelty eventually does wear off and you may find yourself adding a mental commentary to the film to fill in the blanks. You'd have to be a Scrooge to resist the film's whimsy and the talents of the charismatic performers, but I'm scratching my head at the adulation give to The Artist. In a year heavy with reminiscence, The Artist overdoses on feel-good Hollywood nostalgia, and in a down year at the movies, perhaps that's enough when it comes time for awards. Nate's Grade: B

(AP) ? A fire broke out inside a zinc mine in Tennessee on Wednesday, trapping three miners inside for about three hours before they were rescued, authorities said. Two other miners below ground were injured by smoke inhalation.

The three miners were trapped by smoke and needed respirators before they could leave the mine. A rescue team helped them out and they appeared unharmed, though they were taken to a hospital as a precaution, said Tim Wilder of the Jefferson County EMA.

"They looked about as good as expected for being underground for three hours," he said.

Wilder said the miners had been in contact with authorities by couldn't leave because the smoke was so thick. "It's the ending you hope for," he said.

Renata Roberts, a spokeswoman for Switzerland-based mine operator Nyrstar, said the three rescued miners were "in fine spirits."

"We are working with mine safety officials and others to make sure it's safe to resume operations. We are undertaking a full investigation," Roberts said.

There were 54 miners underground at the time of the fire, according to Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

It was not clear yet how the fire started on a drill rig about 800 feet below ground around 1:10 p.m. EST.

The Young Mine is about 25 miles northeast of Knoxville.

According to MSHA records, Nyrstar has been operating the mine since 2006 and has had six operator injuries this year and seven operator injuries last year. Most were minor, according to descriptions of the incidents available on the MSHA website.

In November, a truck bed hit a high voltage cable causing a power outage in part of the mine. The mine was evacuated until power was restored about two hours later.

The mine had an average of about 99 miners working underground in the third quarter of 2011.

Miami Returning $83,000 In Shapiro Donations

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? The University of Miami is giving back $83,000 it says it received "directly and indirectly" from Nevin Shapiro, the former Hurricanes booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect whose claims of giving athletes and recruits extra benefits for nearly a decade sparked an NCAA investigation.

Court records show the agreement between the school and bankruptcy trustee Joel Tabas was filed last week. Once the agreement becomes finalized, Miami would have 14 days to make payment to Tabas, who is overseeing the effort to recoup money that Shapiro's investors lost.

"The agreement was the result of a lengthy negotiation process and brings closure to the University's obligations in the bankruptcy case," Miami's general counsel office said in a statement, and Tabas affirmed that to be the case in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The NCAA said in August that eight players would be suspended for either one, four or six games ? most got only one-game bans ? and that they and four others would have to pay back what they received from Shapiro, who claimed to give extra benefits to 72 players and football recruits during his time as a booster, along with contributions to the university's athletic department.

As a condition of the agreement, once it becomes final, the trustee "releases the University and the Athletes from any and all claims, counterclaims ... whether liability be direct or indirect." In short, that means the value of the gifts past and present players received from Shapiro will likely not be pursued by the trustee.

"This amount includes payment of $3,000 in penalties levied by the NCAA on 11 current student-athletes who received improper benefits from Mr. Shapiro," the university's statement said.

Shapiro said he gave athletes money, cars, yacht rides and other benefits from 2002 through 2010. He is serving a 20-year prison term for overseeing a $930 million Ponzi scheme, and involuntary bankruptcy proceedings to recover at least some of the money his investors lost were initiated in 2009. When he was sentenced, federal officials said his grocery-distribution scam led to investor losses of at least $80 million.

The NCAA is expected to levy sanctions against Miami when its inquiry into the school's compliance practices concludes. Miami's football team did not make itself eligible for selection to a bowl game this season, a self-imposed penalty related to the NCAA investigation.

Previous court records show that Miami agreed in July 2010 ? more than a year before the full extent of Shapiro's claims were unveiled in a Yahoo Sports reports ? to repay $130,307 from debtors also involved in the bankruptcy proceedings.

According to the latest court documents, Tabas found "additional potential claims against the University and certain University prior and current athletes" after that settlement. The documents also show that the school and the trustee had some dispute about the new claims, but adds that the school believes resolving the matter is "in the best interests of all parties."

There is no known timetable for the completion of the NCAA inquiry.

Shannon Kellogg: The Involved Groom

There is a new breed afoot.

He has opinions, strong opinions, and he is not afraid to voice them. He is adamant about the catering, he knows the ideal ceremony location, and he is certain the two of you can accommodate his growing list of invitees. He is inflexible, he is determined. He is getting married, darn it, and his needs will be heard.

Contrary to the stereotype of the groom schlepping through his assigned wedding tasks (tux, groomsmen, music and honeymoon), this generation of grooms are increasingly involved in their wedding planning. And while brides may love having their eager groom to discuss the floral choices with, more conflict may also arise in this pre-marital flurry of decisions and indecision. A groom's involvement may escalate from having strong opinions to a case of having too many chefs in the kitchen (as if in-laws and friends weren't already contenders).

The involved groom has numerous preferences which may fly contrary to the bride's ideal, and the key is to address these encounters with care. Here's how to negotiate your groom's enthusiastic involvement, while maintaining the sanity that you have worked so hard to maintain.

1. Emphasize your strengths and delegate!
Gone are the days of "his" and "hers" wedding tasks. Is your groom undoubtedly the foodie of the two? Have him head up the search for the caterer and sample the cakes. Is he the creative, artistic type? Let him explore invitation options and table centerpieces. Are you a musician and have strong opinions about what constitutes acceptable tunes? Book the band and set the playlist yourself. By harnessing each of your strengths onto duties where you naturally flourish, the planning process will become more fun and the outcome fantastically unique.

2. When gridlock occurs, ask questions first.
Power struggle. Read these two words and note that they are likely at play when you both have drawn your line firmly in the sand. Couples often get caught up in fighting for their victory, simply because it's habit and it feels better to win than lose. Instead, try to see things from his perspective before defending your own. Ask what led him to feel so strongly about this? What outcomes does he hope to accomplish? How would it feel if he missed out on this? The answers might surprise you. Shifting the focus from winning to understanding the issues is an effective way to break the standoff. Often a compromise will emerge. And more importantly, the relationship will remain intact.

3. Maintain emotional congruence.
Conflict will arise when one or both of you has a rigid pre-conceived notion of how your nuptials "should" be, and it's often influenced by outside factors. Rather than focusing on the "shoulds" or societal expectations that so often are attached to a wedding, make an effort for both you and your partner to pay attention to your inner voice. It is easy to become swept up in wanting to please relatives, vying for acceptance, or trying to fit the mold of what others may expect from you based on outside factors, like career, income bracket, family, lifestyle, and personality. Head this off by talking with your partner about your idea of what others expect. Are the expectations unrealistic? Are pressures from outside sources real, or are they inflated in your own mind? Discuss together what you think others expect, and what each of you feel are your "shoulds." Next, shift the focus to looking within to find out what matters to you. If there were no consequences, no preconceived notions, what would you envision? Take time to reflect on your own thoughts and listen to your instincts as your guide.

4. Let your partner influence you.
Are you feeling like emotional road-kill after a talk with your bridesmaid? Is your head spinning about the nuances of dinner seating arrangements? Now is the time to cuddle up to your involved, opinionated groom and allow him to help with your concerns. Often, he'll provide you with a perspective you hadn't considered. By talking about your worries, you will get emotional support from your guy, while showing your deep respect for his perspective. And your highly involved groom? He'll be glad that you value his opinion, and in return will be more likely to listen to your advice when he needs guidance.

An involved groom makes for an involved husband, and that is a predictor in marital satisfaction. So while it may have come as a shock to find your groom passionate about the wedding planning process, it's helpful to see it for what it is. He cares about your wedding, he cares about you, and yes, it's his big day, too.

Google page rank #1. Is it possible.

Hey, First off, I'm new to this forum, been looking around alot. Looks good, gonna stick here for a while.
Second, I have recently only just started a website, domain registered only 2 weeks ago. In the past 3 days I have achieve rankings on Google for some of my main keywords (not high PR rankings however), But I have managed to actually get results. (back links mostly)

So. My question is. How much work/cost would it be for me to get my website listed in on the #1 page for some of these keywords below? Heres a picture of my current rankings/keywords Im focusing on.

Google page rank #1. Is it possible.-tftlc.jpg

Im unsure if I am allowed to show my domain/post it so if not, please advise.

Some keywords obviously have more competition. The main keywords I want to work on are..

Karmaloop coupons - About 2,770,000 results - Current rank 76
Karmaloop codes - About 192,000 results - Current rank 179

I have purchased some .edu backlinks from SmarterSubmit, focusing on the keywords above. Hopefully they will help improve my rankings.

So, do you think it is possible for me to rank first page for both of these? What should I do?

Thanks,
John

PFT: Cowboys expect Romo to play vs. Giants

Tom BradyAP

Eighteen games remain in the 2011 NFL season: Bears-Packers tonight, Falcons-Saints tomorrow and 16 games on New Year?s Day. Here?s a rundown of how each team still in contention can have its playoff position affected by the results of those 18 games:

Patriots: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating Buffalo or by having both the Ravens and Steelers lose.

Ravens: Clinch the AFC North and a first-round bye with a win or a Steelers loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win and a Patriots loss.

Steelers: Clinch the AFC North with a win and a Ravens loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win, a Ravens loss and a Patriots loss.

Texans: Locked into the AFC No. 3 seed. Week 17 is meaningless to Houston, and the Texans may rest many of their key players.

Broncos: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chiefs, or a Raiders loss.

Raiders: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chargers and a Broncos loss. If the Broncos win, the Raiders can still get a wild card if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Titans lose or the Jets win.

Bengals: Clinch a playoff spot and the No. 6 seed if they win, or if the Jets lose and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Jets: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals and Titans and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Titans: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Jets win and the Broncos or Raiders lose, or the Jets lose and the Broncos and Raiders both win.

Packers: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs if they beat either the Bears tonight or the Lions next week, or if the 49ers lose next week.

49ers: Clinch a first-round bye with a win next week or the Saints losing either on Monday night or next week. The 49ers can still get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win and the Packers lose to both the Bears and the Lions.

Saints: Clinch the NFC South if they win either of their two remaining games, and they could even clinch the NFC South if they lose both of their remaining games, if the Falcons lose in Week 17. The Saints can?t get home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but they can get a first-round bye if they win both their remaining games and the 49ers lose next week.

Cowboys/Giants: Next Sunday night?s game is essentially a playoff game: The Cowboys-Giants winner wins the NFC East and is the No. 4 seed, while the loser?s season is over. If the game ends in a tie, the Giants win the division.

Falcons: The Falcons can clinch a playoff spot tonight by the Packers beating the Bears. They need just one more win or one more Chicago loss to get to the playoffs. They could still win the NFC South, but only if they beat the Saints Monday night and win next week, plus the Saints lose next week.

Lions: Detroit is an NFC wild card. Whether they?re the No. 5 or No. 6 seed depends on the results of their own game with the Packers and the Falcons? remaining games.

Bears: Chicago can still make the playoffs, but only if they win both their remaining games and the Falcons lose both their remaining games.

Physicist builds Lego Large Hadron Collider (Yahoo! News)

9,500 piece model took Copenhagen-based researcher weeks to construct

As scientists at the CERN?Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland?continue their search for the elusive Higgs boson "God particle," one physicist has built a tribute to their work entirely out of?Lego bricks. Sascha Mehlhase, a researcher at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, spent more than 80 hours designing and constructing a model of the supercollider's intricate?ATLAS detector.

Mehlhase, who is part of the institute's high energy physics group, spent about 48 hours modeling the ATLAS on his laptop in Lego's?Digital Designer software. He used the application's ability to generate a custom construction manual, but decided to simply eyeball most of the work after seeing the 4,500-page tome it spit out. With some help from his wife, Mehlhase spent 33 hours over the course of several weeks assembling 9,500 bricks to reproduce even the smallest details.

The final model stands nearly two feet tall and is 1:50 scale ? or actual size, if you're a little Lego person. In fact, Mehlhase even chose jumpsuit-wearing Lego minifigs to represent the CERN scientists and recreated the passageways they use to access the inner areas of the ATLAS experiment. The total cost for the project was almost $2,600 in Lego bricks, which had to be custom ordered from the Danish toymaker.

Mehlhase hopes to eventually publish a construction manual online and intends to showcase the finished model at the Niels Bohr Institute for visitors and students to marvel at. You can see more images of it at?the University of Copenhagen's site.

Rwandan rebel freed after intn'l charges dropped (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The International Criminal Court says it has freed a Rwandan rebel and returned him to France after dismissing charges against him.

It is the first time that the court, based in The Hague, has released a detained suspect since it began work in 2002 as the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.

Charges of murder, rape and torture against Callixte Mbarushimana were dropped last week for lack of evidence. The crimes were linked with actions by Rwandan rebels in neighboring Congo.

His release was delayed because he was the subject of a U.N. travel ban.

Mbarushimana had lived in Paris before his arrest in January. On Friday the court said he was "released on French territory, as he requested" through the cooperation of the Netherlands and France.

Haiti: Minister attacked while visiting DomRep (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? A presidential adviser in Haiti says that a government minister was attacked while visiting the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Presidential adviser Damian Merlo said late Friday that Minister of Haitians Living Abroad Daniel Supplice is doing fine but he had no other details.

The newspaper Le Matin reported that four members of the Dominican police force robbed Supplice and his family Thursday of his cell phone and valuables. The alleged incident happened in the city of Santiago while the minister was in the country for a wedding.

Supplice's Twitter account posted Friday night that he was "doing very well" and would speak to the press Monday.

Neither Supplice nor Dominican police could be reached for comment.

GWAR Reviews War Horse

I can?t believe it either, but I?ve chosen to accept GWAR ? the satirical, Grammy-nominated heavy metal outfit ? as real film critics. In a new clip, the costume-loving dudes both praise and rip on War Horse, unleashing a fiery badinage that Ebert and Roeper would have killed for. Just watch it, dammit.

?I think they should change the name to Snore Horse!? Nice to know that heavy metal icons also enjoy pejorative puns as much everyday film critics. In fact, they should go by punnier monkiers: Might I suggest LOLnard Maltin and L.M.A.O. Scott?

So, it's really beginning to look like Christmas, but with all the stress that's characteristic to this very season, we can imagine that many of you (some of us included) find it difficult to get into that jolly Christmas mood that's an absolute must for this time of the year. With this in mind, we thought "Hey, the App Store is full of apps about drinking beer, farting, talking cats and dinosaurs... there must be a few Christmas-themed offerings as well!" You know what? We were right. Here are a few apps to help you get into the right mood for Christmas...
  • Christmas Music ~ 10,000 FREE Christmas Songs! - Free
What better way to get in the mood for Christmas than singing along with a few beautiful Christmas songs?! C'mooon, who doesn't love Christmas carols! Really, we're sure that if you try one, you'll want to sing more and more. And this app is just the right tool for the purpose, with an incredible catalog of about 10,000 Christmas songs. Enjoy!
  • History of American Christmas and Its Traditions - $0.99
While you're practicing your singing though, it might be a good idea to read about the origin of the holiday and all the cool traditions that go with it. You know, just to refresh your memory. What has happened on that day? Why do we give presents? Who is this Santa Claus guy, and why no one objects when he breaks into people's houses? These are all questions that this nice little app here will be happy to answer.
  • Christmas Cooking Recipes - $0.99
Alright, ladies, time to do something useful! Hey, hey, this was just a joke! Stupid - yeah, but a joke nonetheless. Geez... Christmas Cooking Recipes offers a selection of 39 recipes for delicious dishes, which are very appropriate for the Christmas holidays. But it's OK if you don't want to cook. We'll just order pizza and coke. It's cool...What's Christmas without a Christmas tree? Well, this just can't happen. Every self-respecting household should have one, but you know what the best part about the Christmas tree is? Decorating it! You know what's even better? You can let your kids do all the decorating so that you can watch some TV. However, you don't want to end up with an ugly tree, so you can first let your little bandits practice with the oChristmas Tree app, where they can use dozens of different ornaments to decorate a virtual tree. Once they are ready, you'll just have to approve the project and continue watching your show.
  • Christmas Fun - All In One - Free (more content is unlocked via in-app purchases)
Here's the ultimate Christmas all-in-one fun that you can find on the App Store! Singing along Christmas carols, playing mini-games and coloring pictures - you'll find it all in this app. It will surely be lots of fun for both kids and adults alike.

FilmFunds to use crowdsourcing to pitch 3D conversions (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? FilmFunds -- a networking site for filmmakers, actors, financiers and fans -- has acquired post-production house Duran Duboi U.S. and will soon begin converting movies into 3D, TheWrap has learned.

And the company has developed a unusual way of pitching its conversion services.

Carl Freer, the co-founder and chairman of FilmFunds, told TheWrap that he plans to ask his members what movies they'd like to see in 3D. Then he'll go to companies such as Netflix and let them know that there is a demand for certain movies to be converted into 3D.

Now that the company owns Duran Duboi, which specializes in special effects and 3D conversions, it will offer its services to the companies it approaches.

"From the content owners' side, it's a nice way to gauge what the market wants," Freer said, explaining that content providers have told him that they find it difficult to figure out which movies they should convert.

But he has access to 60 million movie lovers -- and can ask them.

"If enough people log on and vote the same way," he said, "we would go back to -- for lack of a better word, go to the Netflixes of the world -- and say, 'Here we have a project that we have a hundred thousand people who want to see this."

That way, he said, "we're taking off a bit of the risk in the decision-making."

Christian Paris, president of Duran Duboi U.S. -- and now vice president of FilmFunds -- will spearhead the conversion process through his company's patented LiveFlix technology.

The technology was used to convert Lionsgate's recent "Conan the Barbarian" into 3D.

"We put together a process which ... allows us almost to convert on the fly," he told TheWrap. "This is designed for home video."

The company also has placed a formal bid on Duran Duboi France, now in Chapter 11

Cuba travel language dropped in budget deal (AP)

MIAMI ? Luis Damian came to the U.S. from Cuba nearly a decade ago and has never returned. Nor does he frequently send money to his relatives on the island.

Still, he doesn't understand why Cuban-American politicians from South Florida want to roll back the ability of fellow Cuban-Americans to visit and send money to family there.

"Look, I'm going to be frank. The situation is really screwed there," the Miami chef said. "The only ones who are going to be hurt are the Cuban people."

Since taking office, President Barack Obama has allowed Cuban-Americans to visit extended family on the island as many times as they want and send unlimited remittances to relatives there. But Cuban-Americans such as Damian were concerned about an amendment to the $1 trillion-plus omnibus spending package that would have returned U.S. regulations to the George W. Bush era, when Cuban-Americans could travel to Cuba only once every three years and send only $1,200 to immediate relatives on the island annually.

However, a deal on a $1 trillion spending bill was reached Thursday night after Republicans agreed to drop the language dealing with Cuba.

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, a Cuban-American, sponsored the amendment, which the House Appropriations Committee unanimously approved this year. The Florida Republican argued that the 30 percent cut that the Cuban government takes from remittances has been propping up a dictatorship, adding billions of dollars to its coffers. He also maintained people have been abusing the spirit of the regulations by making repeated trips to sell items to Cubans that are otherwise difficult to obtain on the island.

"This is not a humanitarian issue," Diaz-Balart has told The Associated Press. "People who go there 10 or 15 times a year. It's become a business, and a very lucrative business for the Castro regime."

Damian wasn't convinced.

"The government and the officials, they always have money. They will be fine," he said. "I think the politicians don't understand because they don't have relatives on the island. They've made their life here. Most of their family is here."

Older Cuban-Americans who came shortly after the revolution and have few connections to the island tend to support limited travel and remittances. They also wield significant influence in the swing state of Florida. Although increasingly in the minority, they are far more likely to vote and contribute to political campaigns than the growing number of Cubans who have come to the U.S. in the last 20 years and who generally want to help relatives on the island any way they can.

Tomas Bilbao, executive director of the Cuba Study Group, a group founded by Cuban-American business leaders supporting greater exchange with the island, called it ironic that Cuban-American lawmakers want to reverse the law now. He noted that since Obama loosened travel restrictions to the island, the Castro government has begun to allow private enterprise and for the first time permitted Cubans on the island to buy and sell cars and houses.

But Mauricio Claver-Carone, director of the US Cuba Democracy Advocates in Washington, who favors tighter restrictions, argued the Castro government should not be rewarded for limited economic changes "at a time when (political) repression in Cuba has also more than doubled."

He also cited the more than two years that have passed since American development worker Alan Gross was detained for providing internet technology to the island's Jewish community.

Phil Peters, a Cuba expert at the Virginia-based Lexington Institute, doesn't dispute the human rights violations. He said travel restrictions aren't the answer.

"Obama should continue to stand up for human rights in Cuba. At the same time, I think we should have policies that help the average Cuban live a better life. There's no contradiction," he said.

"Before, the remittances used to be money to help your aunt buy cooking oil and clothing. Now you can send your aunt money to buy the equipment to start a business, or you can send your aunt money to buy a home, because opportunities are opening up. It would be crazy to back away."

Superheroes Prove Nobody is Immune to Breast Cancer | Madame ...

The Associa??o da Luta Contra o Cancer is making sure young women in Mozambique get the message that breast cancer can happen to anyone with a new ad campaign using images of some of the most popular female superheros like Storm, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, and She-hulk.

The illustrations show the comic book characters performing breast exams and run with the words, ??When we talk about breast cancer, there?s no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor.?

Wording above the images, created by Maisa Chaves, reads ?Nobody is Immune to Breast Cancer.?

According to the Daily Mail, the association isn?t afraid to get creative in order to get the message out, previous ads made it appear as though spiders and cockroaches were living under the skin of women?s breasts as motivation to perform monthly self-checks.

What do you think about the superhero breast cancer campaign?

Hands-On With WowWee's AppGear AR Gaming Toys | TechCrunch

WowWee, not content with creating singing Elvis heads, is branching out into AppGear Appcessories ? apps that require AR-based accessories, allowing you to interact with real environments using an iPhone or iPod Touch. These games, arriving in stores in April, include a zombie game where you?re the zombies fighting off upset homeowners (What a twist!) and an air battle game that actually uses tiny foam planes attached to the front of your phone to simulate flying in three-dimensional space.

The games will cost $9.99 and include various collectable parts. For example, the zombie game, Zombie Burbz, includes four collectable figurines. Of of the figurines has a set of conductive pads on the bottom and, using the iPad?s multi-touch screen, you control the action by moving the figurine across the virtual board.

All of these concepts are quite cute. Mixing AR and gaming is a tough sell but I think WowWee has gotten it mostly right. One game, for, example, allows you to build a ray gun in real life and mix and match parts, resulting in odd weapons that do different things inside the game. It?s an interesting way to connect collectables with games.

Will it succeed? Meh. Kids are notoriously fickle and these sorts of things require an investment of time and effort that many casual gamers might now have. Why install a foam airplane when you can just fire up Angry Birds. That said, it?s a start and it can only get better. And the zombie game, in which the zombies eat garbage instead of brains, is pretty funny.

New York's U.S. attorney returns smuggled dinnerware to Iraq (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Now that President Barack Obama has declared the war over in Iraq, it's time the country got its tableware back. And the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York is happy to handle the job.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said on Wednesday that his office became aware last month that dinner and salad plates once owned by Saddam Hussein had been smuggled into the United States and were subsequently sold on Ebay.

Along with the plates, the smugglers had sold stolen china that dates back to the pre-Hussein royal family of Iraqi King Faisal II.

The U.S. Marshals Service tracked the plates and china to Park Avenue Autumn, a Manhattan restaurant, where they were being used in an art exhibit by the dinnerware's new owners, Creative Time, a nonprofit arts organization.

Bharara said once Creative Time was told about the illegal nature of the plates, it agreed to hand them over to his office.

Justice Department personnel on Tuesday delivered the plates to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations.
