Olympus board announces chairman and president picks, resigns

Olympus's entire board handed in its resignation this week, but not before picking a new president and chairman to head up the scandal plagued imaging company. Hiroyuki Sasa, from its medical equipment marketing arm, has been named for the president spot, and Yasuyuki Kimoto, who served as an executive for the Olympus-connected Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., has been picked for role of chairman. Both appointments are pending shareholder approval. Sasa, for his part, stated the importance of getting consumers back on board with the company in light recent controversies, telling the press, "My duty is to win back as soon as possible the trust from everyone and repair this damaged brand."

Web Development | Web Site Marketing Internet Business - 5 ...

Making a go of an Internet business is a mixed bag. Despite what popular business books released over the past few years would have you believe, very few folks are making 6 figures online by only working 4 hours per week!

Granted, there are a handful of folks out there who are truly "living the life." These guys and gals are sitting on the beach somewhere, periodically taking a break from their sun tanning to sip a cold margarita as they watch the cash flow in via their online sales dashboard.

But, even those folks did not start out working just a few hours a week. Rather, it is a sure thing that they put in some serious time over a period of many months or years before they got to that point. Not only did they work very hard, but the truly successful online marketers have learned how to tap into the success factors that can turn one hour of actual work into 100+ hours of benefit.

Does your Web site marketing Internet business need a boost in order to increase sales? Here are 5 success factors you should be implementing right now:

1. Make sure you have chosen the right niches:

Not all niches are created equal. Be sure to do your research before committing your efforts to promoting a particular niche. Think about it this way: would you rather be getting paid an average of $0.10 per website visitor or $10.00? It's a no brainer. Get yourself access to tools that can tell you which niches are going to perform.

2. Approach every online effort you try into two phases: test and at full blast:

You need to learn to strike the right balance between testing and going at full blast. When you are testing a niche, remember that you need to put in some significant effort in terms of content creation and strategy. But then, let it sit for a while. If it turns out to be a dud, move on to another niche. If it seems to hold promise, turn up the volume. Just don't make the mistake of putting too little effort into testing; otherwise, you'll never know what works, what doesn't.

3. Master the art of keyword selection:

It cannot be over-emphasized: good keyword research is the cornerstone to online success. Keyword research is your guide to which keywords are hot, which have a lot of competition, and which don't.

4. Dominate with your content distribution:

You need to find ways of mass-distributing your content to not just one, but multiple sites at once. Whether it be articles, videos, or blogs, make sure to dominate the field when it comes to getting that content distributed to hundreds of sites at once.

5. Test, measure, adjust and do again:

We conclude with another one of the most important success factors, which is testing and adjusting your efforts accordingly. The cycle you should follow is: test, measure, adjust, and do again (repeat). Everything you do online should be tested and adjusted. You will almost never get it perfectly right the first time - there are too many variables that come into play.

Master these 5 success factors for your Web site Internet marketing business.

2 Science Publishers Delve Into Science Fiction

On the one hand, traditional publishing has been dying. No biggie, direct e-publishing is drastically more efficient. Books cost 99 cents to $2.99 (sometimes a buck or two more) and the author makes MORE money per copy sold that they would make with a $15 hardcover. No advances, and the author has to pay for editing out of pocket, but there's solutions to this. Several authors I know of would release a "beta version" of their stories as an ebook, make some money, and pay editors to help them make a cleaned up and improved version.

Not to mention that you can communicate directly with fans and get feedback immediately, rather than the letter writing days of the past.

However, I've also read that fantasy as a genre is far more lucrative than science fiction. Lots more sales, hence the reason there seems to be a shrinking number of good science fiction authors.

Furthermore, the dreams of the past have proven dead. The hopes of the atomic age and space age have turned out to be far more difficult to achieve in reality. Instead, it now looks like the world of the future is going to be far weirder and harder to understand than than we dreamed of. Humans are NOT going to just pack their stuff into spaceships and start colonizing the moons and local planets, then somehow cheat physics and do the same thing at other stars. (that will conveniently have worlds just like earth, with compatible biology and biochemistry but no sentient life)

In fact, a rational view of other future, one based on the current trajectories of how things are heading, is that human beings will NEVER colonize anywhere else. "Apes in a can" spaceship will never happen. Us short lived jumped up primates are too fragile and too dumb, instead we will bootstrap our way to creating entities that do not have our human weaknesses.

Lord Lucan 'may be alive after fleeing to Africa', says brother after 38 years of silence

"The last time I had contact with my brother was a long, long time ago before the incident, lost in the mists of time.?

Speculation that Lucan may have been in Africa has mounted after a watch owned by the missing earl surfaced after reportedly being bought in South Africa.

The silver watch has a broad leather strap and is engraved with the message: 'Presented to Lord 'Lucky' Lucan ? the Old Fossil ? by his friends at the Clermont Club, Mayfair, 18 December 1967'.

Fresh claims also emerged that John Aspinall, the owner of the Clermont, helped spirit Lucan out the country

A former secretary to Aspinall told the BBC she had arranged for Lucan's two sons to holiday in Africa so Lucan could observe them from afar.

Mr Bingham told newspaper he knew little about the case against his brother but said police had never travelled to South Africa to interview him.

He said he had kept his silence except to talk to a couple of retired detectives who had taken an interest in the case.

Officers linked to the investigation also believe Lucan may have lived in Africa.

Detective Chief Supt Drummond Marvin, who later took over the case, told the Mirror: ?I have no doubt that he got clean away with the help of his upper crust friends ? the Sloane Square Mafia, who I believe still help him to this day."

The detective rejected claims Lucan committed suicide, saying he was neither mad enough nor brave enough.

Lady Lucan, 72, who still lives near to the murder scene, insisted her husband was dead.

She said: "He died soon after the murder. It's rubbish, I can guarantee they didn't go to Africa. It's ridiculous, it's false."

Met abandons Bondy `Rigoletto' for Vegas version (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - The Metropolitan Opera has abandoned a new production of Verdi's "Rigoletto" by director Luc Bondy, whose grim version of Puccini's "Tosca" provoked intense booing when it opened the 2009-10 season. In its place, the company will present a far more radical reinterpretation that relocates the action to Ratpack-era Las Vegas of 1960.

Ancient Chinese medicine could fight aging

A flowering Tibetan shrub that tricks cells into thinking they are starving could become a weapon against multiple sclerosis and even old age.

The roots of the blue evergreen hydrangea (Dichroa febrifuga) have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to treat malaria. Now Tracy Keller and colleagues at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston have found that halofuginone ? a chemical based on the roots' active ingredient ? blocks immune reactions that can cause disease.

Cells stop the synthesis of non-vital proteins when amino acids are in short supply. Keller's team discovered that halofuginone mimics such a shortage by blocking an enzyme that feeds one amino acid to the protein-making machinery.

Keller found that the drug triggers a chemical cascade that responds to amino acid scarcity, called AAR. This inhibits the growth of malaria parasites, stops blood cells from making proteins that cause inflammation, and stops the development of specific white blood cells that trigger conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and multiple sclerosis.

This could make the drug effective against autoimmune disease. But as halofuginone mimics nutrient deprivation, there is another possible use. Animals that receive only just adequate nutrition are known to live longer, partly because diseases which involve inflammation are prevented. That, says Keller, means halofuginone might possibly work as an anti-aging drug.

Starve a virus, feed a cure?

ScienceDaily (Feb. 12, 2012) ? A protein that protects some of our immune cells from the most common and virulent form of HIV works by starving the virus of the molecular building blocks that it needs to replicate, according to research published online in Nature Immunology.

The finding comes from an international team of researchers including scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, several institutions in France -- and a graduate student who who is a political refugee from Africa and is now at work in a Rochester laboratory, intent on helping his people who have been devastated by the HIV epidemic.

While researchers hope the work will one day lead to a way to make anti-HIV drugs more effective by increasing their potency against the virus, they're also excited about its implications for our knowledge of other pathogens, such as herpes viruses, which use the same machinery within our cells that HIV does to replicate.

"The findings may explain why certain anti-HIV drugs used today are more effective under some circumstances and not others," said Baek Kim, Ph.D., professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester Medical Center and one of three corresponding authors of the paper. "It also provides new insights on how many other viruses that afflict people operate in the body."

The work centers on a protein known as SAMHD1, which is found in white blood cells known as macrophages and related cells known as dendritic cells. Last year scientists discovered that the molecule makes it difficult for HIV-1 to infect macrophages -- cells that specialize in gobbling up and destroying invaders like viruses.

Now researchers have discovered that the molecule cuts off the supply line of the raw material that HIV needs to create DNA and replicate. That raw material, dNTP, comprises the building blocks of DNA, and without it, HIV can't recreate its DNA in our cells.

The team found that SAMHD1 destroys most of these building blocks, making it nearly impossible for HIV-1 to replicate itself where SAMHD1 resides -- the macrophages. Instead, HIV-1 uses the macrophage as a safe haven, surviving in patients for years as it dodges the immune system as well as the drugs designed to kill it. It's thanks largely to its ability to hide out in the body that HIV is able to survive for decades and ultimately win out against the body's relentless immune assault.

The team also discovered how a protein in the other common type of HIV -- HIV-2, which is found mainly in Africa -- knocks out SAMHD1. They found that the protein Vpx destroys SAMHD1, clearing the way for HIV-2 to infect macrophages. While scientists have known that HIV-2 needs Vpx to infect macrophages, they hadn't known precisely why.

Interestingly, while one might think that a virus that is able to replicate itself in crucial cells like macrophages might be more dangerous than one that cannot, that's not the case with HIV. HIV-2 is actually less virulent than HIV-1.

"We don't know precisely how SAMHD1 and Vpx affect the virulence of HIV-1 and HIV-2, but it's something we're actively exploring," said Kim. "In this case, the ability of HIV-2 to replicate more quickly in macrophages does not help it become more virulent."

One possibility is that, like a starving man who becomes more and more desperate for food, the virus -- when faced with a shortage of raw materials -- puts its mutation gear into overdrive, creating more mutations in an effort to circumvent the pathway blocked by SAMHD1. Such constant mutations are one feature of HIV that makes it so challenging to treat patients.

"It makes sense that a mechanism like this is active in macrophages," said Kim. "Macrophages literally eat up dangerous organisms, and you don't want those organisms to have available the cellular machinery needed to replicate. And macrophages themselves don't need it, because they don't replicate. So macrophages have SAMHD1 to get rid of the raw material those organisms need to copy themselves. It's a great host defense.

"The work suggests new ways to target virus replication in macrophages, a critically important cell population that serves as a key reservoir of virus infection and a contributor to HIV-induced disease," added Kim.

At Rochester, Kim was joined in the research by graduate student Waaqo Daddacha, one of two first authors of the paper. A native of the Oromia region of Ethiopia, Daddacha came as a political refugee to the United States. He started out as a computer programmer, then decided to pursue HIV research as a way to help his homeland, where the rate of HIV is one of the highest in the world. As an undergraduate in Minnesota, he visited several laboratories around the nation that focus on HIV, eventually settling on the Kim lab, which he joined four years ago.

"Back home, many people are infected with HIV, and many people are dying because of it. I wanted to contribute to help solve the problem, and that's why I decided to pursue HIV research," said Daddacha, who still has family in Oromia. In Kim's lab he is focusing on understanding drug resistance among HIV patients and on finding ways to limit resistance to make the drugs more effective in patients.

Like Daddacha, Hichem Lahouassa of the National Health and Medical Research Institute is also co-first author of the paper. The other corresponding authors, in addition to Kim, are Nathaniel Landau, Ph.D., of NYU Langone Medical Center, and Florence Margottin-Goguet, Ph.D., of the National Health and Medical Research Institute in France.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the European Research Council, and several organizations in France.

FDA Unveils Biosimilars Guidance

For pharmaceuticals, small-molecule drugs and biologicals have long been regulated under two different tracks, for reasons both historical and practical (including the problem that biologicals simply aren't amendable to the kind of complete analysis you can do on small molecules). Sometime ago (maybe about a decade or so?) back, the FDA decided to modernize things, and start applying principles from the former track to the latter. There were a lot of facilities that used processes little-changed since being invented back as far as the 50's and 60's, that were shuttered; recent product and vaccine shortages happened not long after the number of manufacturers dwindled (for some products, from double-digits down to 1-2 sources).

Anyway, wanted to give an example of the limitations of characterizing biologicals. A while back, there was a case involving an Erythopoetin drug (used to treat certain kinds of anemia). The FDA mandated a change in manufacturing, in a big push to get rid of animal-derived raw materials (in this case, anything bovine-derived, following the mad-cow scare). The protein drug in the new formulation was found to be exactly the same by every testable parameter -- sequence, folding, everything else -- and seemed to function the same when examined in animal and human subjects. But when it was released for use in the field, there was a sudden spike in cases of pure red blood cell aplasia (where the body simply stops make any RBCs). Little details in the manufacturing process can sometimes make an enormous difference.

To use an analogy, biologicals are sometimes like arcane and kludgy code that nobody fully understands; once you somehow get it working, there is good reason to not to poke it, and to fear that it might break in somebody else's hands.

PFT: M.I.A. may owe big money for Super bird

Chris Owusu, Johnny WilliamsAP

Stanford wideout/return specialist Chris Owusu entered his senior season with second-day draft grades from NFL scouts, but suffered two concussions in 2011 and did not play in Stanford?s final four games. He suffered a previous concussion late in his junior year.

Owusu?s agent, Steve Caric of Caric Sports Management, revealed to PFT on Thursday that Owusu has been medically cleared to continue his football career. Owusu received a Combine invite and will participate fully with the wide receiver group in Indianapolis.

Per Caric, Owusu has been symptom free since November 6 of 2011, one day after his last concussion. A doctor with the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee has diagnosed Owusu as ?perfectly normal? and cleared Owusu ?to play football now.? The doctor also determined that Owusu is not at greater risk of concussions due to his history.

Owusu was Andrew Luck?s top wide receiver in 2010. He averaged over 15 yards per reception in his career and returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. At 6-foot and about 200 pounds, Owusu is expected to run a forty time in the 4.3s at the Combine.

NFL teams, of course, will likely look at precedent in these kinds of cases. Like Owusu, Lions tailback Jahvid Best missed the final four games of his college career with a concussion. Best suffered two more concussions in 2011, one during the preseason and the second in Week Six. Best?s season was over.

A healthy Owusu is a top seven or eight receiver in the 2012 draft whose game-breaking return ability could conceivably push him into the top five. Receiving medical clearance from the NFL is the first step toward rehabbing his draft stock.

China's inflation rebounds in January to 4.5 pct

(AP) ? China's inflation rebounded in January as food prices soared, renewing pressure on the communist government to control surging living costs while it tries to boost slowing economic growth.

Consumer prices rose 4.5 percent over a year earlier in January, up from the previous month's 4.1 percent, data showed Thursday. Food prices jumped 10.5 percent, accelerating sharply from December's 9.1 percent rise.

The rebound in inflation broke a monthslong decline from July's 37-month high of 6.5 percent. It will complicate efforts by Beijing to stimulate the cooling economy by easing curbs on lending and investment.

Inflation is politically dangerous for the ruling Communist Party because it erodes economic gains that underpin the party's monopoly on power. Last year's price spike stoked frustration among a public that is angry about pervasive corruption, a yawning gap between rich and poor, pollution and product safety scandals.

The food price rise was driven by a 25 percent gain in the cost of the pork, which is the staple meat in China. In December, pork prices rose 21.3 percent.

Communist leaders have promised pro-growth policies for entrepreneurs after the plunge in global demand and lending curbs caused a wave of bankruptcies, raising the threat of job losses and unrest.

The Cabinet promised Wednesday to try to shift more of the country's prosperity to the poor by increasing the required minimum wage for the lowest-paid workers by at least 13 percent each year through 2015.
